What is Bacterial Vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis is a kind of bacterial infection in the vagina of a fully grown woman (after adolescence). Bacterial vaginosis is mainly caused by the bacteria Gardenrella organism.

Bacterial imbalance:
Normally there are many useful bacteria in the reproductive track. Sometimes, there is an overgrowth of these bacteria which causes infection.

An overgrowth of bacteria interferes with the normal pH balance of the uterus which causes fishy and odorous discharge accompanied by foul smell. There may also be a thin milky discharge which is often irritating. Bacterial vaginosis may cause irritation and pain.

Not Fatal:
In most cases, however, bacterial vaginosis does not cause any problem and goes unnoticed. In case of severe infection, the symptoms like foul discharge, fishy smell and irritation occurs. Bacterial vaginosis is not fatal. In some cases, when the infection is serious, it may cause gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Such infection needs medical treatment.

Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment:
If you notice any symptom like fishy smelling discharge, irritation and pain or even some kind of dysfunction, consult a doctor. He will diagnose whether you have any disease and start Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment, if required. Oral antibiotics and gels are administered for bacterial vaginosis. The disease may occur during pregnancy and even after thorough treatment, the disease may recur.
